Poker Games

Online poker has the benefit of giving you a choice of a tremendous range of different types of poker games. Generally these variations of poker games are easy to understand from a rules perpective, but of course the complexities become more evident when learning the different strategies involved with playing each type successfully. This means that normally it is best to focus on mastering one type of poker game before expanding into others.

Remember that when choosing a type of poker game to focus on,  you'll also need to consider the variations within each type - from no limit or limit cash or ring games to the huge range of poker tournaments.

Here we're going to cover the basics of the most popular variations, with short introductions and quick links to further detailed information.

Ring games are cash games played on tables where you join or leave at any time. The online poker rooms generally offer a wide range of cash games with stakes that range from play money and very small limits up right up to the higher amounts. In a cash game, you can take a seat at any table with a free place and play against the other seated players in an attempt to walk away with more cash than you started with.

Poker tournaments are highly popular, with a huge choice of online poker tournaments to play in - from free to enter freerolls right up through low cost entries and up to higher levels for the most valuable prizes....read more on poker tournaments.....

Texas Holdem

Texas Holdem is widely recognised as the king of poker games - a complete test of skill and character often seen on TV in televised tournaments and also played in the major land based tournaments.

Omaha Poker

Omaha is another fairly common poker game variant, with two main types - HiLo or Straight Omaha. Ring games and tournaments are available as with Texas Holdem. Players are dealt are dealt 4 cards and the best hand is formed by using 2 of them plus 3 of the 5 community cards.

Stud Poker

Stud Poker has a bnumber of different types, including games of 7 Card Stud, Hi Lo, 5 Card Stud, and Razz. Stud is not as popular as Texas Holdem or Omaha, and games may be difficult to find. Stud poker games offer the same ranges of stakes.

7 Card Stud
Is played with seven cards in 5 rounds. Players need to form the best hand using 5 of the 7 cards. Basically you're playing with your own 2 cards which only you know, four cards face up on the table, and one unknown face down.

Hi/low
Hi Low is played with the same rules as 7 Card Stud, except the pot is split between the highest and lowest hands at the end of a game.

Razz
Razz is the same as seven card stud, however it is played using ace-5 low hand values. Games are hard to find.

Draw Poker

Similat to 7 card, Draw Poker has a number of different game types including 5 Card Draw, Triple draw, and Badugi.  Cash games of draw poker are available, though not often seen in tournaments.

5 Card Draw

5 Card Draw is a relatively popular poker game with different formats on offer including limit, pot limit, and joker games. After the blinds have been placed and cards dealt, there are two betting rounds. After the first round players have the option to change and improve their hand by discarding up 5 of their cards and replacing them with new ones.

Badugi

Badugi is a 4-card version of triple draw lowball poker. Highly popular in Korea, the goal is to get 4 cards of different suits with no pairs. This is called a Badugi. Badugi makes use of the same blind structure as other games; however there are no community cards. Badugi games can be found at a few of the online poker sites.

Triple Draw

Triple draw is another variation of Draw Poker where players are dealt a complete hand before the betting rounds start.
